The 2025 Golden Globe nominations have been announced, giving us a better idea of which films could have the juice to make it all the way to Oscar night—though the full list of nods also contains a number of head-scratching citations that feel like classic Golden Globe choices.
Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut revealed Monday morning that Emilia Pérez leads this year’s nominations with 10 total, the highest number ever bestowed upon a musical or comedy—and a welcome burst of momentum for Jacques Audiard’s unconventional musical after it was largely overlooked by precursors including the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and the Gotham Awards. It was followed closely by Brady Corbett’s architecture epic The Brutalist, an early favorite that was surprisingly under-nominated by the Independent Spirit Awards last week.
It’s been an unpredictable awards season so far, with everything from the teeny-tiny Sing Sing to the behemoth Wicked earning praise and nominations—and almost none of the other major races feeling particularly settled either. With separate “drama” and “musical or comedy” categories, the Globes are built to nominate as many people and projects as humanly possible—which may mean that they actually don’t serve as a perfect indicator of true Academy Awards momentum. The Globes also have a habit of making quirkier decisions like, say, nominating Pamela Anderson for The Last Showgirl—one of the biggest surprises in a year filled with them, which feels especially invigorating after a 2024 ceremony where most wins went to the most expected projects: Oppenheimer, Succession, and The Bear.
The 2025 ceremony seems likely to be electrifying as well. This year, it’s being hosted by Nikki Glaser, who’s still flying high after her career-changing appearance at Netflix’s 2024 roast of Tom Brady. The tart-tongued Glaser seems like an ideal fit for the Globes, someone who will be able to rib the ceremony’s well-heeled attendees without alienating them—unlike last year’s host, Jo Koy, whose performance was a fairly unmitigated disaster. The awards will also get a jolt of legitimacy from this year’s honorary Globe recipients: Viola Davis, who will receive the lifetime achievement-esque Cecil B. DeMille Award, and Ted Danson, who’s set to receive the TV-actor equivalent, the Carol Burnett Award. But Davis and Danson will receive their prizes at a separate gala dinner two nights before the main Globes ceremony, rather than during the telecast—so anyone hoping to hear their speeches will have to tune in to two separate events.
The 82nd Golden Globes air January 5 on CBS. Look below for a full list of 2025 Golden Globe nominations.
