What is the meaning of a promise if it is not fulfilled? Where do we end if the journey begins at the end? Director Hend Sohail presents in her first film “Sea Secretariat“These questions are tried to be answered during the short trip that Zain embarks on with the body of his deceased mother, to fulfill a promise he made to her that he was unable to fulfill while she was alive.”Sea SecretariatOne of the films participating in the seventh El Gouna Film Festival.

Exciting drama

With a mixture of drama and excitement, the events of the film, which is being shown for its first appearance in the Arab world at the seventh session of the El Gouna Film Festival, begin from the tiny, remote village in which Zain’s family lives, and the first thing we see from inside his house are several pictures hanging on the wall with a picture of the sea in the middle, and Zain conveys His gaze is between her and his mother, who is lying on the bed, taking her last breath, while he tries in vain to heal her.
After the mother's death, Zain, played by the actor, gathers together Nabil Boutros TalaanThe last thing he has left is his strength and courage, and he steals his mother's body in the car that was supposed to carry it to the burial ceremony, and sets out in search of the “sea road” for this to be the first time he goes out into the wide world outside the borders of his tiny world.
Carrying with him a picture of the sea, Zain’s journey begins as he tries to fulfill the promise he made to his mother, which is to see the sea that she had always told him about together. Then a dog appears out of nowhere, quietly intercepts his way and imposes its presence smoothly, refusing to move away from him or his mother’s body, which is what prompts Zain to take him with him. With him, in a stunning metaphor about the dog guiding Zain through his journey of fulfilling his promise from its beginning until he reaches the sea.
Just as the obstacles prevented Zain and his mother from achieving this basic dream, his final journey with his mother’s body is filled with obstacles that almost robbed him of the dream of arriving. However, in a very poetic shot, the film ends with Zain finally arriving at his destination, sitting next to his mother’s corpse and the dog, his fresh friend, so that he can finally fulfill the promise and bid farewell to his mother in front of the sea, perhaps in the only way that satisfies him. In a gloomy gesture, death gives him what life did not give him.
