In an elegant ceremony held during the seventh edition of the Gouna Film Festival, attended by a notable audience of festival guests, the Arab Cinema Center and European Film Promotion announced the winner of the sixth edition of the Arab Critics’ Award for European Films. This year’s shortlist featured 22 European films, which were reviewed by 89 esteemed Arab critics from 15 Arab countries.
The coveted award was won by The Sacred Fig Seed, directed by the acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof. The film delves into the life of Iman, an investigative judge in the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, who grapples with mistrust and paranoia amid widespread political protests and the mysterious disappearance of his weapon.
Alaa El Sheikh, Director of the Arab Critics’ Award for European Films, expressed her gratitude: “I extend my heartfelt thanks to all our colleagues, the Arab critics who participated in the jury, and to the new members who joined this year, for their dedication and commitment in watching the films on the Festival Scope platform and casting their votes in both stages of the award.”
The Arab Critics’ Award for European Films was launched in 2019 by European Film Promotion and the Arab Cinema Center, aiming to foster diversity in the Arab region’s cinematic landscape and to garner greater interest from distributors and industry professionals in high-quality European productions. This initiative also underscores the vital role Arab critics play in promoting fresh perspectives and fostering cultural exchange between different societies.
