“I’m losing my way for the first time.” Miyazaki & Suzuki! One more final official trailer has debuted for a documentary film called Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron, a fascinating making of inside look at Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron film. This originally premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival as part of their special gala presentation for an Honorary Palme d’Or for Miyazaki-san + a few of his shorts. Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron is a two-hour doc film version of the behind-the-scenes TV series following animation master Miyazaki spend years crafting the animated film The Boy and the Heron, which also won the Oscar earlier this year. Japan’s NHK TV originally aired another version of this doc called 2399 Days with Hayao Miyazaki & Studio Ghibli. This final “Cannes version” is a “two-hour window into the heart of Hayao Miyazaki’s creative process. The documentary film follows six long years of work during the making of The Boy and the Heron.” Rave reviews from Cannes call it one of the most intimate & lovely looks at this legendary filmmaker yet, following up other docs about him that have shown recently. Yep this looks great.

Here’s the final official trailer for Kaku Arakawa’s doc Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron, from YouTube:

Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron

You can rewatch the original festival trailer for Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron right here for the first look.

Via Cannes: “Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron is a two-hour documentary that chronicles the making of The Boy and the Heron, filmed with exclusive access to Studio Ghibli across an astonishing seven years. It is also a record of the collaboration between filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki as they perform an intricate dance of deception and friendship, mirroring that of Mahito and the Heron, as Suzuki pushes Miyazaki ever further into his creativity, ultimately delivering an unprecedented masterpiece.” Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron is directed by Japanese doc filmmaker Kaku Arakawa, who also directed the other two Miyazaki behind-the-scenes docs previously, titled Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki and 10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki (on NHK). Produced by NHK Television in Japan. This initially premiered at he 2024 Cannes Film Festival, after a shorter cut aired in Japan on TV earlier this spring. This festival cut is a “new version” of the doc. The full film is already available to watch in the US streaming on Max here.
