“We are so lucky to visit this country at a key moment of its history” Strand Releasing has unveiled the official trailer for Meeting with Pol Pot, a French drama made by acclaimed Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh. Yet another film about his homeland and the horrors they went through during the era of Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge. Based on a true story, three French journalists travel to Cambodia in 1978 after receiving an invitation from the Khmer Rouge regime (all without realizing the atrocities his regime was perpetuating), embarking on a perilous adventure. Under the eyes of the journalists, the pretty picture of communist Cambodia cracks, revealing the horror. Their journey progressively turns into a nightmare… Meeting with Pol Pot was freely inspired by journalist Elizabeth Becker’s account in the book “When The War Was Over”. The indie film stars Irène Jacob, Grégoire Colin, and Cyril Gueï. This initially premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and will get a US release in narrow theaters soon. Have a look below.

Democratic Kampuchea (Cambodia) – 1978. Three French journalists are invited by the Khmer Rouge to conduct an exclusive interview of the regime’s leader, Pol Pot. The country seems ideal. But behind the Potemkin village, the Khmer Rouge regime is degenerating and the war with Vietnam threatens to invade the country. The regime is looking for culprits, secretly carrying out a huge scale genocide. Under the eyes of the journalists, the pretty picture cracks, revealing the horror. Their journey progressively turns into a nightmare. Meeting with Pol Pot, also known as Rendez-vous avec Pol Pot in French, is directed by prolific Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh, of many films including One Evening After the War, The Land of the Wandering Souls, The People of Angkor, The Sea Wall, The Missing Picture, Graves Without a Name, and Irradiated previously. The screenplay is written by Pierre Erwan Guillaume and Rithy Panh. Adapted from Elizabeth Becker’s book “When The War Was Over”. Produced by Catherine Dussart, Roger Huang, Justine O. This initially premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Strand Releasing will debut Panh’s Meeting with Pol Pot film in select US theaters starting sometime early 2025.
