“What color are you?” GKids has debuted one more official US trailer for this beloved Japanese anime titled The Colors Within, set to hit US theaters in January 2025. In this novel film from director Naoko Yamada, a girl who can see colors in people’s hearts joins a band with two other people. The synesthete Totsuko can see others as colors. Honor student Kimi has dropped out of school but still pretends to attend anyway. They reunite and form a tiny band with Rui, who dreams of composing on analog synthesizers but whose mother expects him to become a doctor. Together, they find freedom, joy, love, through music. Featuring music by Kensuke Ushio, and animation by the studio Science SARU. The Colors Within is getting a proper wide theatrical release around the US starting in January after a restricted run at first – because it has such good buzz after playing at festival for most of the year and opening in Japan already. And it looks gorgeous – this trailer especially! The film’s official English dub voice cast: Libby Rue as Totsuko, Kylie McNeill as Kimi, Eddy Lee as Rui, with Eileen Stevens, Hinano Kuzukawa, Eden Harker, Maxine Wanderer, and Lani Minella as Kimi’s grandmother. A must see on the huge screen soon if you’re waiting to watch this film.

Totsuko is a high school student with the ability to see the ‘colors’ of others. Colors of bliss, excitement, and serenity, plus a color she treasures as her favorite. Kimi, a classmate at her school, gives off the most lovely color of all. Although she doesn’t play an instrument, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, a serene music enthusiast they meet at a used bookstore in a far corner of town. As they practice at an elderly church on a remote island, music brings them together, forming friendships and stirring affections. Will they discover their true ‘colors’? The Colors Within, also known as きみの色 or Kimi no Iro (Your Color) in Japanese, is directed by acclaimed Japanese animation filmmaker Naoko Yamada, director of the “K-On!” and “Tamako Market” anime series, plus the films A Silent Voice and Liz and the Blue Bird. The screenplay is written by Reiko Yoshida. It’s produced by Eunyoung Choi, Yoshihiro Furusawa, Genki Kawamura, Kôhei Sakita. With animation by Science SARU. This initially premiered at the 2024 Annecy Film Festival earlier this summer, and it opened in theaters in Japan in August. GKids will release Yamada’s The Colors Within in select US theaters starting December 13th (only in LA) then in wide release on January 24th, 2025.
