There have been live-action Ghostbusters movies. And there have been animated Ghostbusters TV series. But now, 40 years after Ivan Reitman and his crew first answered the call, it looks like the legendary sci-fi franchise is ready to cross the streams with an animated Ghostbusters movie. According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix are teaming up to bring the parapsychologists into a whole modern dimension for the first time as a feature length offering.

Not to be confused with the modern Ghostbusters animated series that’s been in the works at Sony Animation and Netflix since 2022, this modern movie is reportedly setting up to expand the Ghostbusters universe as the franchise looks to explore modern horizons following the release of live-action legacy sequels Afterlife and Frozen Empire. And while, as you’d expect, plot details on the modern film are being kept strictly under wraps for now, Deadline‘s insiders are reporting that Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 and The Willoughbys director Kris Pearns is the man Sony and Netflix have called to helm the feature. What’s more, it sounds as if those same insiders are suggesting that the hope with the modern animated series and movie is to reinvigorate the IP, to do for Ghostbusters what the Spider-Verse movies have been doing for Spider-Man.

With Sony Pictures Animation’s distinctive 2D/3D hybridised approach on Into and Across The Spider-Verse — as well as The Mitchells Vs The Machines — having established a bold modern era in blockbuster animation, the custodians of the Ghostbusters will doubtless be hoping that some of that same magic can rub off on the supernatural franchise, especially given Frozen Empire‘s diminishing returns both critically and commercially. And if a change of form and direction is what it takes to make Bustin’ feel good again, then we’re all for it. To the Ecto-1, nerds!
