Roll up, awards buffs: shiny trophy season is hotting up, with BAFTA having announced its nominees for this year’s ceremony. And fittingly, it seems BAFTA members might have gathered in robes to submit their votes on little white slips of paper: papal thriller Conclave is the most-nominated film this year, receiving 12 nods including Best Film, Director for Edward Berger, Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Adapted Screenplay and more. Send up the white smoke, people.
Hot on Conclave’s heels is Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s genre-defying crime-thriller-musical-character-drama, in which a cartel boss undergoes gender-reassignment surgery to begin her up-to-date life. The film is nominated in 11 categories. Audiard is nominated for Director, while the film itself is up for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Film Not In The English Language. Emilia herself, Karla Sofía Gascón, is up for Leading Actress, with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña both in the Supporting Actress category.
Elsewhere, The Brutalist stood towering with nine nominations (including Best Film, Director, and Leading Actor for Adrien Brody); Wicked is flying high with seven nominations (with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande both up), as is Dune: Part Two and Anora; keeping tempo with six nominations each are music biopics-of-sorts A Complete Unknown and Kneecap; while horror-heads will be pleased to see five nominations for Nosferatu (largely in technical categories), and The Substance – notably including a Leading Actress nomination for Demi Moore, a Director nod for Coralie Fargeat, and Original Screenplay. Oh, and Hugh Grant got a Leading Actor nomination for Heretic.
In the Special Visual Effects categories, it’s a battle of monkeys and worms, with nominations including Better Man, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, and Dune: Part Two. There were acting nominations for Sing Sing’s Colman Domingo and Clarence Maclin. Feathers McGraw couldn’t stop Wallace & Gromit from getting three nominations; Dev Patel got a debut feature nomination for directing Monkey Man; and documentary nominees included Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story and Will & Harper.
Who’ll receive those shiny gold masks, then? We’ll find out when the BAFTA ceremony takes place on 16 February – until then, here’s the full list of nominees.
