With the Oscars right around the corner, all eyes are on Adrien Brody, who is nominated for best actor for his role in Brady Corbet’s architecture epic, The Brutalist. “I’ve been really making sure to stay present with everything I do and with everyone around me,” Brody told Vanity Fair while attending Thom Browne’s New York Fashion Week runway show at The Shed in Hudson Yards on Tuesday evening.
It’s been 22 years since Brody made Oscar history as the youngest-ever best-actor winner for his haunting performance in The Pianist. He was 29. This time around, he’s trying not to get distracted by thoughts about the past or worries about the future. “In between working and supporting the film, I got to step back and do some stuff in LA that was quite meaningful to me personally. So that’s really where I’m at.”
Last week, Brody volunteered at Pasadena Humane to aid animals affected by the devastating California wildfires. During his visit, he cared for injured and lost pets as well as displaced wild animals impacted by the fire.
As for how it feels to be nominated for best actor again? “There is a different level of love, really, that I’m receiving right now—even from that time, which was quite overwhelming as a young man,” Brody said while mingling backstage before the start of the show. “The love—it’s something that I’m very grateful for and trying to reciprocate to everyone.”
When asked if winning a second Oscar at the age of 51, versus 29, would be more meaningful, he replied, “To be honest, I’m trying not to give it too much of my attention. I’m living in a state of appreciation, and already it’s been so overwhelmingly positive. So all of the awards and nominations are just remarkable,” he said. “I’m so moved because it’s taken over two decades to be back with a role like this, and to be part of a film that really speaks to the human condition. I do not take any of this for granted. It’s a beautiful moment in my life. I’m living in a pretty grateful state right now.”
Brody—dressed head to toe in a navy Thom Browne typewriter-cloth, unconstructed overcoat, along with a sport coat with matching typewriter-cloth chino trousers and a Milano-stitch navy cardigan—sat front row in between Global Chief Content Officer of Condé Nast Anna Wintour and Kerry Washington. Brody has been collaborating with the brand and wore a sophisticated made-to-measure Thom Browne tuxedo with grosgrain tipping to the Golden Globes last month and won his first Golden Globe award.
