“Life here is gruesome, frustrating. Failure is inevitable.” Don’t go to the Galapagos and expect luxury! A German distributor has released the intense first official trailer for Eden, the latest Ron Howard-directed feature film coming out sometime this year. Maybe. This initially premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Fest last year, but it got pretty bad reviews and it looks like it’ll be too intense and weird and aggressive for most people. It’s opening in Germany this April, but has no US date set at all yet. Have a look anyway! The film follows a group of people fueled by a profound desire for change; in order to turn their back to society they leave everything behind and set their futures on the harsh landscape of the Galapagos. Based on historical events, this scintillating thriller stars Jude Law and Vanessa Kirby as high-minded Europeans seeking a recent life on a previously uninhabited island in the Galápagos archipelago. They and those who follow them believe they’ve found paradise — only to discover that hell is other people. The glamorous full cast includes Ana de Armas, Daniel Brühl, and Sydney Sweeney as others who show up to the island. But everyone starts fighting, everyone turns bitter and bitchy, the island becomes a lviing hell, and everything starts to fall apart & descend into chaos. Yep, sounds like up-to-date society these days! Join them on the island below.
Here’s the first international trailer (+ German poster) for Ron Howard’s film Eden, direct from YouTube:
Dr. Friedrich Ritter (Jude Law) and his partner Dora Strauch (Vanessa Kirby) flee their native Germany in 1929, repudiating the bourgeois values they believe are corroding mankind’s true nature. On the Galapagos isle named Floreana, Friedrich can focus on writing his manifesto, while Dora resolves to cure her multiple sclerosis through meditation. Their hard-won solitude, however, is tiny lived. They’re joined by Margaret (Sydney Sweeney) and Heinz Wittmer (Daniel Brühl), who also prove to be earnest, capable settlers. Next comes Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn (Ana de Armas) a self-described Baroness and the “embodiment of perfection,” who arrives with two devoted lovers, an Ecuadorian servant, a wardrobe full of evening gowns, and plans to erect a luxury hotel. Between inclement weather, unruly wildlife, and a total lack of amenities, all three groups find life on Floreana arduous. But nothing will test their mettle more than the challenge of coexisting with desperate neighbours capable of theft, deception… and worse.
Eden is directed by acclaimed American actor-turned-filmmaker Ron Howard, director of the films Grand Theft Auto, Splash, Cocoon, Willow, Backdraft, The Paper, Apollo 13, Ransom, Edtv, A Beautiful Mind, The Missing, Cinderella Man, The Da Vinci Code, Frost/Nixon, Angels & Demons, The Dilemma, Rush, In the Heart of the Sea, Inferno, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Hillbilly Elegy, and Thirteen Lives most recently, plus numerous other doc films as well. The screenplay is written by Noah Park (of the “Genius” series, The Show, Tetris); from a story by Ron Howard & Noah Pink. Produced by Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Karen Lunder, Stuart Ford, William M. Connor, Patrick Newall. This initially premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival last year as one of their Gala Presentations. The film will open first in Germany starting April 3rd, 2025. No US release date is set for Eden yet – stay tuned for more updates. First impression? Does it look good?
