Look up! With CinemaCon in full swing and DC Studios head honcho James Gunn mere months away from bringing his new-look DCU to the gigantic screen with the hotly anticipated release of Superman, excitement — and nerves — are building as fans wait with baited breath to see if David Corenswet’s Kal-El has the Krypton factor or not. The first teaser for the Man of Steel’s cinematic comeback certainly held a lot of promise, offering tantalising glimpses at Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, kaiju-sized monsters, and — perhaps most importantly — Krypto The Superdog, the goodest boy on this or indeed any other planet. And it’s Supes’ trusty snow-white pooch who leads DC Studios’ newly dropped extended sneak peek at Superman — which you can check out below;
We fear we may have fallen irrevocably in love with the dog, folks. But how couldn’t you? Having been shown coming to his master’s aid in that first Superman trailer back in December, that Gunn’s Krypto — inspired by his own rescue dog, Ozu — is a hero in his own right was never in any doubt, but in this extended look at that icy rescue sequence, we get to see a more playful side to the caped canine as he rags Supes about a little before whisking him off to the Fortress of Solitude. (Also, yes, we see the Fortress of Solitude here — and it looks majestic!) And not only do we get to see Krypto earning all the pats and belly rubs, but as a team of Alan Tudyk-led robots get to work on bringing Kal-El back to fighting fitness with the lend a hand of some good aged yellow sun radiation, we’re reminded that this is undeniably a James Gunn joint: one giggling robot says “he looked at me” when Superman comes to, while Tudyk’s No. 4 (presumably an analogue for the comics’ Kelex) is quick to remind Krypton’s last son that no thank yous are necessary as automatons “have no consciousness whatsoever.”
Elsewhere, the novel sneak peek at what Gunn’s been cooking finishes up with a riff on the initially released teaser, offering some novel shots of the Daily Planet newsroom, Hoult’s nefarious Lex Luthor, and Clark Kent’s burgeoning romance with Lois Lane, as well as some frigid blink-and-you’ll-miss-em cameos from Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl. With Superman set to hit cinemas worldwide on 11 July, it’s almost time for the Man of Tomorrow to become, well, the man of today. *Alexa — play John Williams’ ‘Superman Theme’*
