If you’re looking for plot from the first teaser of Ari Aster’s up-to-date movie, Eddington, we’re here to inform you that you won’t find one. Our first look at his Beau Is Afraid follow-up is one minute of pure vibes. And yet, you sort of know what to expect here. An overwhelming sense of doom? Check. A leading role for Joaquin Phoenix? You bet. Some kind of commentary on obscure human foibles? Hell yeah. It’s an Ari Aster movie! Watch the ominous first trailer here:

Given that this is a cryptic first taste, there’s plenty to unpick here. Firstly, that Eddington is set in 2020, with everything that implies: chatter about the pandemic, a widespread sense of division, and the uncanny experience of scrolling between world-ending news and internet inanity on Instagram (“1 like = 1 ACAB”). The person doing that scrolling? Phoenix, who also appears on said Instagram feed, advocating for gun ownership in Eddington, New Mexico. He’s not the only gigantic name. There’s a rant from Austin Butler (@vernonjeffersonpeak), an apology from Emma Stone (@louise.cross), and campaign promises from Pedro Pascal (@MayorTedGarcia) – this is Aster’s starriest cast yet. Overall, it looks like we may be in similarly satirical territory to the heightened anxiety nightmare of Beau Is Afraid, more than the outright gut-wrenching terror of Hereditary and Midsommar.

There’s no synopsis for Eddington yet, but stay tuned for more trailers to possibly illuminate more plot – and since the film will debut at Cannes this May, hopefully it’ll see a wide release before the summer is through.
