“You think you’re some sort of hero? I hate to break it to you, kid, there’s no such thing as a hero! Vertical has revealed an official trailer for a crime comedy film titled California King, arriving to watch later this month. It just premiered at the Brussels Fantastic Film Festival in Belgium – and will be out soon on VOD for anyone who is ready to dive in. Perry, a mattress store manager, hatches a wild plan to impress the girl of his dreams, but his efforts go off the rails when his fake kidnapping of her brother gets more complicated than he expected. Their plan? Step 1: Kidnap her teenage brother. They don’t get to Step 2… It’s a “black-comedy gem with a cunning script, a funky soundtrack and a great cast, including rapper Travis Bennett (member of the OFWGKTA collective alongside Tyler, the Creater, Earl Sweatshirt, Syd and Frank Ocean!).” This stars Jimmy Tatro, Travis Bennett, Victoria Justice, Cooper Sutton, and Joel McHale. Looks like a bonkers movie akin to Superbad or Hollywood comedies they used to make but don’t much anymore.

Perry (Travis Bennett), a bedding manager in a tiny Californian town, is desperate to impress the girl of his dreams. His best pal comes up with a certified waterproof plan: stage a kidnapping of his sweetheart’s little brother, rescue said brother and win over her sweet little heart. The problem is: when two idiots are convinced they have a genius plan, it never goes according to plan… California King is written & directed by up-and-coming American indie filmmaker Eli Stern, making his feature directorial debut after a few other miniature films previously. Produced by Jonathan Glickman, Dan Kagan, Matt Miller. This just premiered at the 2025 Brussels Fantastic Film Festival earlier this month, and at Vidiots in L.A. Vertical will debut Stern’s California King film in select US theaters + on VOD starting April 25th, 2025 very soon. Who’s in?
