Although Aimee Lou Wood may not have been cheerful with Saturday Night Live this past weekend, she’s got no beef with SNL star Sarah Sherman. On Tuesday, the White Lotus actor revealed on Instagram that Sherman, who impersonated Wood’s character in a White Lotus–inspired sketch that Wood found “mean and unfunny,” had sent her a bouquet of flowers.
Sherman sent the actor a pink-and-coral flower arrangement, which Wood shared with her 2.9 million followers via her Instagram Stories. “Thank you for the beautiful flowers,” Wood wrote, tagging Sherman’s personal Instagram, @sarahsquirm.
In a sketch called “The White Potus,” which parodied members of Donald Trump’s family and Cabinet and was inspired by Mike White’s hit HBO series, the SNL player acted as a stand-in for Wood’s character, Chelsea. While all the other characters in the sketch were avatars for political figures like Melania Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Sherman’s Chelsea, complete with gigantic prosthetic teeth meant to mimic Wood’s own teeth, was the only White Lotus character included in the pretaped spot. After “The White Potus” aired, Wood took to her Instagram Stories and called the sketch “mean and unfunny.” “Yes, take the piss for sure – that’s what the show is about- but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?” she wrote.
After receiving an outpouring of support from fans, Wood revealed via Instagram that she had been sent “apologies” from SNL. Wood also clarified in her Instagram Stories that she had no ill will toward Sherman for the impression. “Not @sarahsquirm ‘s fault,” she wrote, tagging Sherman in the post. “Not hating on her, hating on the concept.”
Vanity Fair has reached out to Sherman and Wood for comment.
On Monday, Wood unwittingly added fuel to the fire after paparazzi caught her seemingly crying while on a walk in South London with House of the Dragon actor Ralph Davis. Wood quickly set the record straight, returning to Instagram on Tuesday to share that her tears had nothing to do with the SNL sketch. “Thank you so much. Just to say, I actually wasn’t crying about anything that the papers made out I was crying about,” she wrote, adding a laughing-crying emoji. “Something completely unrelated.”
