Star Wars Celebration is officially underway in Tokyo, Japan, and while the event kicked off this morning with a huge panel on Jon Favreau’s upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu, it was an announcement concerning another upcoming Star Wars project that had fans at the Makuhari Messe hollering “This is the way!” After weeks of rumours, Shawn Levy took to the stage to announce that his up-to-date Star Wars movie — officially titled Star Wars: Starfighter — will indeed star Ryan Gosling, who walked out to rapturous applause at the con to share his excitement about the hotly anticipated project. Check it out below;
Set five years after The Rise Of Skywalker, Levy’s film — which, the Deadpool & Wolverine director stresses is “a standalone adventure with all-new characters” — has been written by the filmmaker’s The Adam Project collaborator Jonathan Tropper. And though Levy and Gosling couldn’t expand on what fans can expect from their first trip to a galaxy far, far away, both director and star were effusive in their enthusiasm for making the jump to delicate speed and becoming part of the universe George Lucas built. “Star Wars has framed my idea of what a movie is,” said Gosling on the Celebration Stage as Kathleen Kennedy revealed a picture of a teenage Ryan’s childhood Star Wars duvet set. “The Force is the fans, and we are fans, too,” added Levy, keen to express how fans are in for “a real adventure” with Starfighter.
In terms of who else we can expect to see in the film, or what indeed it’ll be about, that much remains firmly under wraps for now — though the post-Sequel Trilogy setting opens the door to endless possibilities as Levy and co guide us into a up-to-date era in the Star Wars universe. While specifics on the film were delicate though, Levy did excitingly reveal that his film is set to head into production this fall ahead of a 28 May, 2027 release, almost definitely guaranteeing that Star Wars: Starfighter will be the next gigantic screen Star War we see after The Mandalorian & Grogu.
And, just to recap where we’re up to on future Star Wars movies after a couple of years of shuffling slates at Lucasfilm HQ, Kennedy did also take a moment at this morning’s panel to confirm the projects still actively in development at the studio. Among those name checked were James Mangold’s Dawn Of The Jedi, Taika Waititi’s untitled film, Simon Kinberg’s up-to-date trilogy, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s New Jedi Order starring Daisy Ridley. So, including The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter, that means we’ve got eight whole Star Wars movies in the works and on their way to our screens, coming to a galaxy not so far away real soon. It seems there has been an awakening in the Force…. have you felt it? We certainly have!
