The game is, once again, afoot! Having enamoured fans with her portrayal of Sherlock Holmes’ eponymous crime-solving kid sister in 2020’s Enola Holmes and 2022 follow-up Enola Holmes 2, Millie Bobby Brown is back back back for more sleuthing shenanigans in Enola Holmes 3. Netflix’s latest adaptation of the popular Nancy Springer books, the adolescent detective threequel — directed and written, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, by Adolescence original duo Philip Barantini and Jack Thorne — has just kicked off production in the UK. And, in true Barantini style, stars Millie Bobby Brown and Louis Partridge took to Instagram to share a oner featuring Enola, Partridge’s Tewkesbury, and the movie’s Scouse helmsman. For Enola Holmes’ third cinematic adventure, the younger Holmes is setting sail for Malta for an all-new mystery, teased by Netflix’s official logline for the threequel: “Adventure chases detective Enola Holmes to Malta, where personal and professional dreams collide in a case more tangled and treacherous than any she has faced before.” Per Netflix’s own website, it would seem those personal dreams pertain to Enola’s beau, Tewkesbury, with the pair’s will-they-won’t-they romance having finally been sealed with a kiss in Enola Holmes 2. As for the professional dreams and treachery, little more is promised at this point than “a nest of vipers” who await our kick-arse heroine when she arrives in Malta.
While plot specifics are being kept beyond the reach of even our prodigious skills of deduction for now, we do at least know who’ll be joining Brown and Partridge in the upcoming movie. Henry Cavill is set to reprise the role of Sherlock Holmes alongside Himesh Patel as the consulting detective’s ever true Dr. Watson, while Sharon Duncan Brewster’s Mira Troy — aka Moriarty — is also set for a return here, as is Helena Bonham Carter as Enola’s mother Eudoria Holmes.
We don’t know precisely when we can expect Enola Holmes 3 to arrive on our screens, but while the first two movies were pleasant enough if ultimately flawed affairs, the unexpected presence of Philip Barantini and Jack Thorne at the helm of this third movie has us very intrigued indeed. Although, if you think about it, the duo’s pairing on this does make a lot of sense: they’ve gone from Adolescence to elementary. Fine, fine, we’ll see ourselves out…
