Mister Smith has bulked up its Cannes sales slate with supernatural horror Hide And Don’t Speak starring Tanner Buchanan, Garrett Wareing and Quvenzhané Wallis from Range, producers on the independent horror smash Longlegs and The Monkey.
The film marks the first in a dedicated genre slate launched out of Range’s London offices and spearheaded by Noah Reich, which Screen first wrote about last summer.
Alexander J. Farrell (The Beast Within) will direct the feature from a screenplay he co-wrote with Greer Ellison that is loosely based on the viral internet game hitori kakurenbo
The project, in pre-production and scheduled to start principal photography later this year, follows six teenagers who play a viral Japanese game in which they summon a vengeful spirit for a deadly round of hide-and-seek.
Range’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Longlegs, The Monkey, upcoming Cannes Directors’ Fortnight entry Dangerous Animals) and Fred Berger (A Complete Unknown) are producing alongside Matt Coatsworth. Range’s Noah Reich, Oliver Riddle, and Tom Daley serve as executive producers.
Mister Smith Entertainment will launch international sales and UTA Independent Film Group and Range Select will jointly represent US rights.
Buchanan starred in the Netflix series Cobra Kai, while Wareing is known for his series regular role in Netflix’s Ransom Canyon, and will next be seen in Lionsgate’s The Long Walk.
Wallis became the youngest person to earn a best actress Oscar nomination at the age of nine in 2013 for Beasts Of The Southern Wild. She also starred in Annie.
