Vanity Fair: How did the look come together?
Taraji P. Henson: I didn’t see the look until yesterday at my fitting because Micah and Wayman, my stylists, wanted to keep it as a substantial surprise. I trust them, you know? They know me, they know my style, so we’ve been steadily telling a story in my fashion. And I love Monse. But when I saw it, I was just floored.
Then I was, like, “I think the pants should go.” I wanted it to be a great cross between feminine and masculine, and I didn’t wanna cover all of my femininity up, so my suggestion was to lose the pants. When we took the pants off, everybody was, like, “This is the look.” I knew it was going to be guys doing the whole suit thing, so I just wanted to toss it up a bit. Besides, I worked really tough in the gym. We can’t cover up all my tough work.
Is there anybody whose style you admire who you’re looking forward to seeing tonight?
I cannot wait to see Rihanna! I can’t wait to see her and Zendaya. I can’t wait to see the top ones, the ones that always shut down the carpet. I hope I’m one of them!
Do you have any rituals before you go on a red carpet?
I get lots of rest and drink lots of water. I do my meditation and prayer to keep me tranquil, and that’s about it. I’ll make sure I’m not eating things that are gonna bloat me—I haven’t had carbs in several days. I can’t wait to have a slice of pizza after the Met. I’m gonna have my driver take me straight to a pizza shop!
I just want people to know that I am in a very peaceful place, where I have poured so much into myself. That’s why I’m glowing. Because I’m at peace. I love myself. I think I’m taking care of myself in a way that I never have in my life. I’m staying away from negative energy. Loving from afar, but protecting my peace at all cost. That’s what you’ll see on the carpet, a representation of my peace and joy that I found.
