With summer just on the horizon, there’s never been a better time for Amazon to drop the premiere trailer for the Prime Video adaptation of E. Lockhart’s novel, We Were Liars. After baking in the sun for the last two years, the show is officially set for an arrival on June 18, with today’s first look teasing the heaps of drama to come from the production backed by The Vampire Diaries’ Julie Plec and Roswell, New Mexico’s Carina Adly Mackenzie. Featuring a stacked cast filled with up-and-coming talent that includes Emily Alyn Lind (The Babysitter: Killer Queen) as Cadence Sinclair Eastman, Shubham Maheshwari (Haven Dust) as Gat Patil, and Esther McGregor (The Room Next Door) as Mirren Sinclair Sheffield, the trailer sets the tone for your next summer-centered obsession.
The teaser transports viewers to the shining and sultry days of summer where a voiceover can be heard walking us through the twisted tale of love, deceit, and longing that will play out over the episodic adaptation. The sun never sets on summer or happiness for Cadence (Lind) and her group of friends, who enjoy plenty of time by the beach and at extravagantly lavish house parties. Eventually, the fun train comes to a screeching halt after Cadence is left for dead, which sparks the youthful woman to uncover the truth about what happened to her. Seeking answers, Cadence’s next summer with her loved ones will be different from the ones that came before it, as she tries to sniff out the person (or persons) responsible for the life-changing event that almost took everything from her.
Filling out the remainder of the production’s cast is a lineup that includes Joseph Zada (The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping) as Johnny Sinclair Dennis, Caitlin FitzGerald (Masters of Sex) as Penny Sinclair, Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife) as Carrie Sinclair, Candice King (The Vampire Diaries) as Bess Sinclair, Rahul Kohli (The Fall of the House of Usher) as Ed Patil, and David Morse (The Green Mile) as Harris Sinclair.
Who’s Behind ‘We Were Liars’?
Backing the highly-anticipated adaptation are Plec and Mackenzie, who each have an arsenal of successful credits in their backgrounds. For the former, she’s the co-creator of the hit series, The Vampire Diaries, which she brought to life alongside Scream creator, Kevin Williamson. Plec is also the innovative responsible for the beloved show’s offshoots, The Originals and Legacies, and was also the mind behind The CW’s Containment.
As for Mackenzie, the writer and producer brought fans back to the sci-fi world first penned by Melinda Metz in her Roswell High book series through the series, Roswell, New Mexico. Their work together on We Were Liars marks a reunion for the pair, who also teamed up on The Originals.
