EXCLUSIVE: Paris-based Luxbox has boarded Radu Jude’s Dracula and will kick off sales for the Romanian writer-director’s spin on the vampire tale at Cannes.
Now in post-production, the comedy drama is shot and set in Transylvania where the original myth originated and blends several takes on the Dracula story.
“The film is made with a lot of joy – a joy for cinema and storytelling – and despite the fact that our world is full of vampires, I hope this joy will be felt and shared by those who will watch the film. Make Dracula great again!” Jude said.
He described Dracula as “a film about cinema itself, with its limits, its history and its myths.”
Jude elaborated to say the film will look at the legend of Dracula through different angles including “the absurd (in homage to the historical avantgarde), pulp (in homage to JLG’s Alphaville), trash (Ed Wood), literary (Alain Resnais), playful (Buñuel), political (Romero), theatrical (Brecht), excessive (Lucian Pintilie), naughty (John Waters), fantastic (Méliès) and realistic (Lumière Brothers).”
Dracula is produced by Romania’s Saga Film, with Austria’s Nabis Filmgroup, Luxembourg’s Paul Thiltges Distribution, Brazil’s RT Features, Luxembourg’s Samsa Film, Switzerland’s Bord Cadre Films, the UK’s Sovereign Films and Romania’s MicroFILM.
Jude is reteaming with Luxbox after Kontinental ’25 which premiered in competition in Berlin in February and won the Silver Bear for best screenplay.
Jude won Berlin’s Golden Bear in 2021 for Bad Luck Banging Or Loony Porn and the Silver Bear for best director in 2015 for Aferim. His most recent film was Do Not Expect Too Much From The End Of The World which debuted at the Locarno Film Festival in 2023.
