Pedro Pascal says artists have to “keep telling stories” in the face of potential censorship and US political chaos.

The actor was speaking at the Cannes Film Festival press conference for Ari Aster’s Covid-set satire Eddington where the cast and director were hit with several questions around Trump’s America.

Asked whether appearing in “brave movies” could harm their chances of re-entering the US, Pascal said: “Fear is the way they win and so keep telling stories and keep expressing yourself.

“F*** the people that try to make you scared and fight back.”

The actor called Eddington, which takes place in a petite town during the Covid-19 pandemic as misinformation and divisive politics reign, a “whistle-blower” film

“I’m so used to a kind of lense on US culture from the outside, because there’s so many ways to view issues of politics, sociology, and our very, very complex culture,” he said. “I felt like the first time [with Eddington] that we had like a mole. Like a whistle-blower, almost. Someone from the inside being like ‘this is what’s happening’.”

Director Aster also tackled several questions around Trump, stating that the US is on “a dangerous road”.

“We’re living through an experiment and it’s gone wrong and it’s not going well. There’s no way out of it,” Aster continued. “Right now it’s chaos. It’s clear that no one is actually interested in stopping it. People feel very powerless and very fearful.”

The film also stars Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Michael Ward, Luke Grimes and Joaquin Phoenix.

A24 releases Eddington in North America while international sales are TBC.
