A section of the Cannes Croisette was closed on Saturday afternoon after a palm tree fell onto the walkway, reportedly injuring a pedestrian.

A passer-by told Screen that at around 12.30pm CEST on Saturday there was a raucous ‘crack’ sound as a tree was blown over by the wind, before a scream from a person.

A man was then seen lying on the ground with blood coming from his head, being attended to by fellow pedestrians, and emergency services were called. The pedestrian had been removed from the walkway by 13.45.

Emergency services have been working to remove the tree from the walkway, as seen in the video below.

The incident happened in front of the Mademoiselle Gray Plage Barriere beach, a key venue for Cannes events, with the walkway closed in front of the venue.

Saturday afternoon is among the busiest times of the festival, with thousands of festivalgoers attending meetings and events along the Croisette.

Screen has contacted the festival and the authorities for a response.

UPDATE, 15.10 CEST, 17/5: A representative for the City of Cannes says the pedestrian was “lightly” injured by the 3m-high tree falling on the Croisette.

”The tree will be removed as soon as possible to clear the path for pedestrians,” said the city representative.
