Netflix has acquired US distribution rights to Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague following the film’s debut in Competition at Cannes this month.

Nouvelle Vague follows the production of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, the 1960 film that was a key moment in the French New Wave moment.

Netflix had no comment on the size of the deal, which has been reported elsewhere as in the region of $4m.

Linklater’s film stars Guilllaume Marbeck as Godard, with Zoey Deutch as Jean Seberg and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo, the two stars of Breathless.

The film debuted on Saturday, May 17 in Cannes; it recorded a 2.7 average on Screen’s Cannes jury grid, for joint-fifth place.

Laurent Petin and Michele Petin produced the film for France’s ARP Selection, which will release the film in France this autumn.

Netflix may now look to launch the title on its 2025/26 awards slate, which would require giving it a qualifying theatrical release in the US.

Goodfellas and CAA Media Finance are handling sales on Nouvelle Vague.

It marked US director Linklater’s third time in Official Selection at Cannes, after Fast Food Nation in Competition and A Scanner Darkly in Un Certain Regard, both in 2006.
