It’s been over three years since Heads of State was first announced — but the wait is almost over. Prime Video has finally dropped the first trailer for the long-awaited action-comedy, and confirmed that the film will hit the streamer on July 2, 2025, just in time to airy the fuse for Independence Day weekend. The fresh trailer sets the tone immediately: Heads of State is exactly what you’d expect from a buddy-comedy featuring The Suicide Squad duo John Cena and Idris Elba, who once again bring their explosive chemistry to a globe-trotting adventure. Plus, it’s nice to see Cena attempting to be a good guy after his recent attempts to “ruin wrestling”.
In Heads of State, Cena plays U.S. President Will Derringer, a former action movie star who somehow found his way to the White House. Elba stars as U.K. Prime Minister Sam Clarke, a seasoned leader who’s not thrilled about sharing a stage — or a secret mission — with Derringer. The two have a very public feud, and their tension comes to a boil during a diplomatic event… that ends with their plane getting shot out of the sky.
Forced to survive on the run after becoming targets of a powerful and mysterious foreign adversary, the pair must reluctantly rely on each other to uncover who’s targeting them — and why. Helping them navigate enemy territory is MI6 agent Noel Bisset, played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, whose no-nonsense attitude quickly becomes the only thing keeping both leaders alive and on track. And yes, there’s plenty of banter. At one point, Elba’s Clarke fires off a jab about Cena’s Hollywood past, mocking the idea of a “movie star turned president.” Cue the fireworks.
Who’s Involved in ‘Heads of State’?
Directed by Ilya Naishuller (Nobody, Hardcore Henry), Heads of State brings some sedate action creds to the table, and features a great supporting cast including the likes of including Carla Gugino, Jack Quaid, Stephen Root, Paddy Considine, Sarah Niles, and Richard Coyle. Behind the scenes, the script is penned by blockbuster vets Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec (Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) based on a story by Harrison Query.
Collider’s Steve Weintraub spoke with Elba earlier this year, where the actor described the film as exactly what it sounds like: “Heads of State is literally what it is. It’s about two heads of state, two heads of their countries, that — how can I say? — go on this incredible adventure.”
