FIDMarseille has selected 76 films for its 36th edition (July 8-13), including modern features from Rita Azevedo Gomes, Clemente Castor and Caroline Golum.

The 76 features include 51 titles in competition, and 43 world premieres. 39 of the titles are feature films, of which 28 are world premieres.

Portuguese filmmaker Gomes will present the world premiere of Fuck The Polis in the 14-strong international competition. It follows Irma, a woman who took a trip to Greece 20 years previously, and now retraces the journey accompanied by three youthful men.

Gomes wrote the film with Regina Guimaraes, and produces it for her Basilisco Filmes. The director has previously screened at Locarno with Correspondences, and in Berlin with The Portuguese Woman.

Also in the international competition is Cold Metal, the second feature from Mexican filmmaker Castor. It centres on Mario, a man who wakes up with no memory of his past life; and begins to drift from the eastern suburbs of Mexico City to the surrounding underground caves.

Castor previously directed Prince Of Peace, which won a special mention in the International and First Film competitions at FIDMarseille 2019.

US actress and filmmaker Caroline Golum will present her second feature Revelations of Divine Love. Inspired by the life story of 14th century mystic Julian of Norwich – often regarded as the first woman to write a book in English – the film combines psychedelia and handmade sets.

The French Competition consists of eight titles, of which six are features, all world premieres; while the First Film Competition includes 11 feature world premieres, including Jenya Milyukos’s All Roads Lead To You, a Ukraine-Portugal co-production that evokes Crimea since its loss to Russian invasion.

FIDMarseille aims to “spotlight independent cinema that is attentive to the sounds of the contemporary world and to stories that reveal its fractures – both personal and collective”, according to the festival briefing.
