A town is bursting at the seams in the brand-new trailer for Zach Cregger’s Weapons. At the center of the drama — at least in today’s sneak peek — is Julia Garner, who is about to have one wild summer at the box office thanks to the horror flick as well as her appearance as Shalla-Bal aka Silver Surfer in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps. While the two projects might not have anything similar plotwise, they’re both led by killer ensemble casts, with today’s fresh teaser giving audiences a closer look at the personalities played by Josh Brolin (Outer Range), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Austin Abrams (Euphoria).
Addressing a group of frightened and irate parents and community members, Garner’s school teacher, Justine Grady, clears her throat during the first moments of the modern Weapons teaser. She tells the rowdy attendees that she’s just as upset as they are about the mysterious disappearance of every child in her classroom save for one. But the educator’s empathy can only go so far with the crowd, who call for her to be investigated — a request echoed by enraged parent, Archer Graff (Brolin). We then learn that the children willingly left their homes at the same time in the middle of the night, all running in the same fixed way with their hands hovering over their sides. What happens next is straight-up madness, with sinister entities and warped faces popping out from every corner while Brolin and Garner’s characters immerse themselves deeper and deeper into the mystery.
The Second ‘Weapons’ Trailer Goes Deeper
While Garner and Brolin have previously been featured in other images and teasers to come from Weapons’ marketing campaign, today gave us some better peeks at the characters played by Ehrenreich, Abrams, Benedict Wong, and Cary Christopher. It also teased that there would be more to the storyline than just that of the missing kids, something the director had previously pointed to:
“That mystery is going to propel you through at least half of the movie, but that is not the movie. The movie will fork and change and reinvent and go in new places. It doesn’t abandon that question, believe me, but that’s not the whole movie at all. By the midpoint, we’ve moved on to way crazier s— than that.”
Weapons marks the directorial return of Cregger, who previously helmed the 2022 breakaway horror hit, Barbarian. All eyes are on the comedian-turned-filmmaker as he takes audiences on a fresh journey filled with twists and turns when the title arrives in cinemas on August 8.
