As any self-respecting Lilo & Stitch fan doubtless knows by now, today is 626 day — so named after our beloved lil’ blue guy, formerly known as Experiment 626. And as any self-respecting Disney fan — or anyone with even a cursory interest in cinema — also doubtless knows by now, you don’t make a near-billion-dollar grossing live-action remake of a generationally beloved classic without thinking about potential sequels. With both of those things in mind then, this year’s 626 day has brought with it perhaps one of the most nailed-on sequel announcements of all time: Lilo & Stitch 2 is now in development at Disney. What’s more, the cobalt agent of chaos himself took to the House of Mouse’s socials to reveal his next gig. Check it out below;
Running amok in Walt Disney Studios’ Burbank parking lot, the announcement of Lilo & Stitch 2 sees Disney’s fuzzy blue scamp — kicking it in a snazzy pink convertible — spot a Stage 2 sign, prompting him to spill the beans that he’s getting his own sequel. It’s a cute little bit, and one that comes with approximately zero further details about what exactly Disney’s lucrative follow-up will entail. Will Dean Fleischer Camp, previously of Marcel The Shell With Shoes On fame, return in the directorial hotseat? Nobody knows. Will it be a straight-up adaptation of Disneytoon’s DTV sequel Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has A Glitch, in which 626 reverts to his violent programming and relearns the true meaning of ‘ohana’? Or perhaps alt-Stitch packed earlier Disneytoon effort Stitch! The Movie, which sees Jumba’s other experiments start riotously rocking up in Hawaii? Or the quite literally out of this world Leroy & Stitch even? On all three counts, again, at this point your guess is as good as ours.
Given the somewhat controversial ending to Camp’s first movie however, which *SPOILER ALERT* sees Lilo (Maia Kealoha) adopted by modern character Tūtū (Amy Hill) as her sister Nani (Sydney Elizebeth Agudong) swans off to university, it seems likely that Lilo & Stitch 2.0 (as we hereby dub it) will blast off in its own modern direction. For now then, while we wait for further word on when we can expect Stitch’s sophomore live-action outing, consider us wristband-ready for another Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride (and secretly hopeful that Leroy & Stitch MVP and yellow sandwich snaffler extraordinaire Reuben may make a star turn in the sequel.)
