Less than a year after this enthralling Norwegian monster film debuted on Netflix, a sequel was announced, thrilling fans to bits but also coming as a surprise. Titled Troll, it premiered on December 1, 2022, to a boatload of positive reviews, prompting the birth of a second installment in September 2023. No release date was immediately announced until last November, when we got an arrival window. Now, after months of keeping fans in suspense, Netflix has finally unveiled a release date via a first look at Troll 2, hinting at the perils ahead for fan-favorite heroes.
Directed by Roar Uthaug, who also helmed the first installment, Troll 2 will land on Netflix on December 1, 2025, with the stakes much higher than before as a threatening modern troll is awakened. The upcoming pic reunites Uthaug with returning writer Espen Aukan, and producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud of Motion Blur. Beloved lead star Ine Marie Wilmann will also make a much-awaited comeback as Nora Tidemann, and she’s joined by fellow returnees Kim Falck as Andreas Isaksen and Mads Sjøgård Pettersen as Captain Kristoffer Holm. Sara Khorami completes the heroic group as the fierce newcomer Marion.
In Troll 2, which began filming last year, Nora, Andreas, Captain Kris, and Marion must confront a terrifying modern and monstrous troll that is even more ruthless and destructive than ever, as it unleashes chaos across Norway. According to the movie’s synopsis:
When a threatening modern troll is awakened, unleashing devastation across Norway, beloved adventurers Nora, Andreas and Captain Kris are thrust into their most perilous mission yet. To stop the creature’s ruthless rampage, they must enlist modern allies and delve into the country’s age-old history, searching for answers. As the clock ticks and the troll’s path of destruction grows wider, our heroes face impossible odds in their fight to save their homeland from falling into darkness.
‘Troll’ Expands The Scope with Its Explosive Sequel
While Troll immediately became a favorite among Netflix subscribers globally upon its release, critics also praised it for its brilliant plot. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 90% rating based on twenty-nine reviews, with the consensus stating, “Troll doesn’t rewrite the monster movie rulebooks, but with mythology this rich and action this exciting, it doesn’t have to.” We can expect even more favorable reviews for its sequel, considering the newly released intense teaser as well as Director Uthaug’s goal to “deepen the story.” The filmmaker said of Troll 2:
“With the sequel, we are aiming high – expanding the scope, deepening the story, and creating a troll-sized spectacle like you’ve never seen before. I cannot wait for fans to experience the adventure we have in store.”
Troll 2 will be released on Netflix this December. Stay tuned to Collider for more news about the monster follow-up and watch its first teaser below.
