Last time we got a Joachim Trier film, he capped off his Oslo Trilogy (and gave most slow 20-somethings an existential crisis) with The Worst Person In The World, one of our picks for the best movies of its year. Now, we have a trailer for his latest, Sentimental Value, which reunites the director with Worst Person stars Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie, while also bringing Andor star and acting legend Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning into his melancholic and introspective fold — for a film that looks set to feature a whole lot of family drama. Watch the trailer here:
Those who have seen Trier’s last few films will recognise familiar themes of identity and relationships — however, the tone appears to be more light-hearted than we’ve come to expect from the director, with The Faces’ hit ‘Ooh La La’ indicating huge coming-of-age vibes. But rest assured, it still looks set to dig deep into the father–daughter relationship. If it’s anything like Trier’s last film, we’re sure there won’t be a parched eye in the house. This one follows two sisters — played by Lilleaas and Reinsve — who reconnect with their estranged father (Skarsgård), a once-renowned director. When Reinsve’s character turns down a role in his comeback project, the pair are forced to navigate the arrival of an American film star (Fanning), who takes the part instead.
The film received a rapturous response at Cannes, walking away with the Grand Prix. Which makes it all the more gruelling that the film isn’t being released until November in the US. While Charli XCX teed up a Joachim Trier Summer, it’s looking more likely to be a Joachim Trier Winter. A UK release date hasn’t been announced yet, but we hope to hear more soon. Prepare to leave the cinema with a ton of existential questions.
