Cannes’ Critics’ Week comedy drama ‘Kika’ sells widely for Totem Films | News

EXCLUSIVE: Paris-based Totem Films has closed on multiple territories for Alexe Poukine’s comedy drama Kika which world premiered in competition at Cannes’ Critics Week in May.

The debut fiction feature about a newborn mother who takes desperate measures to stay afloat after a life-altering tragedy has sold to Youplanet Pictures for Spain and Portugal, Little Dream Pictures for Germany and Austria, Agora Films in Switzerland, Bestiario Films in Mexico, K-Films Amérique for French-speaking Canada, Estinfilm in Estonia, and Scanorama in Lithuania. More territories are in discussion.

Condor will release the film in France and Imagine is handling distribution in Benelux.

‘Kika’ review

Kika stars Manon Clavel as a pregnant second-time mother dealing with the aftermath of her partner’s sudden death, who turns to sex work to make money swift. Kika is produced by Belgium’s Wrong Men and France’s Kidam.

Poukine previously directed documentary features including 2013’s Dormir, Dormir Dans Les Pierre and 2019’s That Which Does Not Kill and her latest film Who Cares is currently playing in French cinemas. Kika recently won both the Grand Prix for the national competition and best actress prize for Clavel at the Brussels International Film Festival.

Totem Films is heading to Karlovy Vary International Film Festival with Vytautas Katkus’ The Visitor set to premiere in the main competition.
