“There’s always a message in the music.” 🎹 HBO Max has revealed their official trailer for the energetic, fascinating music documentary called Billy Joel: And So It Goes. This biopic music history doc is about the life and times and songs (and girlfriends) of iconic New Yorker songwriter / musician Billy Joel – it just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. The two-part doc is ready to debut streaming on HBO Max later this month. Tribeca’s intro: “Directors Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin weave rare, never-before-seen archival footage with candid, soul-baring interviews to chart Billy Joel’s meteoric rise—from humble Long Island roots to international superstardom. The film pulls back the curtain on Joel’s private world with unreleased performances, intimate home movies, behind-the-scenes moments that have remained locked away until now… Titled after one of Joel’s most personal songs—written during a tumultuous love affair—the doc film captures a singular voice whose music became the soundtrack of a city and a generation.” Wow! This looks not only comprehensive but enlightening & inspiring. His frankness in these clips makes me very interested in watching more. “He cares about the human experience. The 2-part film is crafted around in-depth, exclusive interviews with Billy Joel, illuminating all the key moments that forged his character and the events and muses that inspired his music for more than six decades. Exploring revelatory novel territory and enriched by vigorous video & performance clips from his musical oeuvre, many never before seen, it’s a window into his process and chronicles his monumental successes, while diving into the hidden complexities of his life. From his childhood on Long Island, shaped by the absence of his father, to his first bands, the women he loved, and colleagues & collaborators who both supported & betrayed him, Joel’s decades of songwriting mirror his affluent, complicated autobiography. Sharing origin stories about chart hits like “Just the Way You Are,” an ode to his first love, and “Uptown Girl,” famously about second wife Christie Brinkley, the film points to the close symbiosis between his life and art, revealing truth in the music that transformed his career, sculpted his legacy, and saved his life. 🎤
