A baby goose aggressively honking at you down the local park is a feral gosling situation, and it’s pretty protected to say we’d never want that. But the star of Barbie and the man who once played Buddy the Elf joining forces for an original action comedy joint at Amazon? Well that’d be a Ferrell Gosling situation, and we are well and truly up for that. Yes, per Deadline‘s reporting, Canadian national treasure Ryan Gosling and SNL funnyman-turned-Hollywood star Will Ferrell are set to share the screen in Tough Guys, which is currently in the works at Amazon MGM Studios.
Neither sequel to Ferrell’s buddy cop comedy The Other Guys nor sequel to Gosling’s buddy cop(ish) comedy The Nice Guys — or indeed last year’s non-buddy cop action comedy The Fall Guy — Tough Guys is instead a whole up-to-date genre offering originating from a spec screenplay by Daniel Gold. In a set-up that vaguely calls to mind that infamous henchman’s family deleted scene from Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery, Gold’s script follows two disillusioned henchmen who decide to flee the manacles of life as criminal underworld grunts and strike out on their own path, building a up-to-date life and playing by their own rules.
Beyond the above elevator pitch for the project, we know nothing else as of yet about Tough Guys and what it has in store; frankly, we don’t even know who’ll be helming it just yet. But nevertheless, the prospect of Gosling — whose really been leaning into his comic chops in recent years (and looks set to do so again in upcoming Lord & Miller sci-fi joint Project Hail Mary) — and Ferrell bouncing off one another on an original, high concept feature is pretty damn tantalising. And who knows? Maybe after Tough Guys, Gosling will decide he really wants to be a nice guy again… one of The Nice Guys again.. maybe— ah, forget it, basically we just want The Nice Guys 2 is what we’re saying. C’mon Shane Black, you know it makes sense!
