What a week it’s turning out to be for video game loving film and TV fans. Yesterday, we got our first look at Link and Zelda in Wes Ball’s upcoming live-action The Legend Of Zelda movie. This afternoon, we got confirmation at long last that Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series is officially happening. And now, to cap the day off, Warner Bros. has just dropped the first trailer for its hotly anticipated Mortal Kombat II, the follow-up to Simon McQuoid’s 2021 cinematic take on NetherRealm’s ultraviolent beat-em-up games. For r-rated violence, eye-popping (or, more accurately, spine-splitting) fatalities, and Karl Urban getting his Johnny Cage on, look no further — check out the trailer below;

“It’s showtime!” We’ll say Johnny Cage, we’ll say — talk about levelling up! For fans of Mortal Kombat, there is plenty here to get excited about: Urban nailing Cage’s pissed-off, JCVD homaging persona; a slew of hype-worthy character reveals (Baraka! Kitana! Queen Sindel! Noob Sabot!); and the return of that immortal Mortal Kombat theme, all just for starters. And for the more casually acquainted, there’s the promise of an MK movie that actually gets down to business to deliver what the franchise is all about: a bunch of jacked, powered-up badasses battling to the death in the ultimate no-holds-barred fighting tournament. And this time seemingly with a little less of Lewis Tan’s misfire hero Cole Young from the first movie and, blessedly, more of Josh Lawson’s rogue merc Kano, Hiroyuki Sanada’s Scorpion, and Tadanobu Asano’s cool-as-you-like god of thunder Raiden.

The miniature but sweet synopsis for Mortal Kombat II — whose sizeable ensemble also includes the likes of Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, and Tati Gabrielle— reads: “This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.”

It’s protected to say that we’ve come a long way since the days of the 90s’ Mortal Kombat and Annihilation, and the prospect of an MK movie with Karl Urban going full Johnny Storm has us chomping at the bit for this one. Handily then, we can look forward to finding out if Simon McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat II earns the filmmaker a flawless victory — or if it falls victim to a perfect fatality from critics and fans — when it gets over here and hits UK cinemas on 24 October.
