What do you think Stitch would do if you gave him a billion dollars? He’d probably spend a chunk of it on some advanced interstellar weaponry, most of the rest on Elvis LPs, and – in an ideal world – save a miniature amount to pay for all the collateral damage he causes. Either way, Experiment 626 should be in for a decent payday, since the live-action Lilo & Stitch has managed a feat that no other Hollywood film has so far in 2025: joining the $1 billion+ box office club.

Yes, Dean Fleischer Camp’s adaptation of the beloved 2002 animated classic – itself not a financial hit at the time – has finally crossed the billion mark, placing it at the #2 spot of this year’s worldwide box office (behind Chinese animated smash Ne Zha 2, sitting at nearly $1.9 billion). The only other Hollywood film this year to come close to pulling in a billion in ticket sales is A Minecraft Movie, with a $955 million global haul. It remains to be seen if the likes of The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Avatar: Fire And Ash will manage to cross the billion threshold.

For now, this is a win for Disney – who, weeks before this milestone was reached, already confirmed a live-action sequel (which apparently won’t directly adapt straight-to-DVD follow-up Stitch Has A Glitch). Expect Stitch’s world domination to continue for a good while longer.
