From the producers of the delightful All Creatures Great and Small comes an all-new mystery series scheduled to hit your screens soon. Titled Lynley, the BBC One adaptation was announced last year, with filming having begun in Ireland in August 2024. Almost a year later, we have an official release date, courtesy of the compelling trailer from BritBox, which teases the novel Tommy Lynley as well as his ill-matched partner, Barbara Havers.

Similar to The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, which ran from March 12, 2001, to June 1, 2008, and starred Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small, Lynley is based on the Elizabeth George Inspector Lynley bestselling novels. As seen in the trailer below, which showcases the mismatched duo’s energetic, the upcoming crime drama will premiere on Thursday, September 4, on BritBox in the U.S. and Canada, with novel episodes released weekly.

Despite being a brilliant police detective, the title character is an outsider in the force, mostly because of his aristocratic upbringing. Then he is paired with Barbara Havers, a maverick sergeant with a working-class background with whom he seemingly has nothing in common. Nevertheless, the incompatible duo become a formidable team, bonded by their desire to see justice done. His brain and her spirit – his knowledge and her instincts. It is only by working side by side do they both find where they truly belong.

Watch the official trailer for Lynley below!

‘Lynley’ Is Stacked with A Brilliant Bunch of Creatives

The four-episode series was created, written, and executive produced by Steve Thompson (Sherlock), with Ed Bazalgette (The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die) serving as lead director and Suzanne McAuley as series producer. Producers are BritBox International, Playground and Salt Films. Leading the cast of Lynley is Leo Suter (Vikings: Valhalla), portraying DI Tommy Lynley, and he is joined by Sofia Barclay (Ted Lasso) as his partner, DS Barbara Havers. The ensemble cast also includes Daniel Mays (Magpie Murders), Niamh Walsh (The English Game), Michael Workeye (My Lady Jane), and Joshua Sher (Vera). Additional stars attached are Nadia Parkes, Jack Archer, and Eloise Thomas, among others. Executive producers of the series include David Stern and Colin Callender for Playground; Robert Schildhouse, Stephen Nye, Jon Farrar and Jess O’ Riordan for BritBox; Kate Woods for BBC Studios, and Sue Deeks for the BBC. Author Elizabeth George also executive produces.

Lynely arrives on BritBox this fall. Stick with Collider for future updates about the bingeworthy British series and catch up on The Inspector Lynley Mysteries also on BritBox.
