Things are about to get heated, weighty, and very complicated for Jonah Hauer-King, Zoey Deutch, and Ruby Cruz. Vertical has released the first trailer for The Threesome, a romantic comedy that is so much more than its opening encounter. The footage teased a messy romantic journey that goes beyond sex and follows its three stars as they come to terms with what it means to be a true adult and take accountability when it matters. It’s a dramatic tale all about the emotional entanglements and the consequences that arise from one night together, and it’s set to hit theaters on September 5.
The Threesome casts Hauer-King as the unassuming Connor, who has long had a crush on his former co-worker, Olivia (Deutch). On one fateful night, while visiting the restaurant that employed them both, she steers them both toward an encounter with the alluring Jenny (Cruz), who had been stood up by her date. What initially seemed like the night of his dreams, sparking a relationship with Olivia, suddenly becomes a crash course in accountability when, weeks later, Jenny re-enters both of their lives with a massive development that completely changes the active between them. Romance and pregnancy unfold as the trio is left to take accountability for the real-world consequences of their actions while trying to move forward with their relationships with one another.
Hauer-King is riding high heading into The Threesome, most recently surviving the bloody reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer and appearing in Doctor Who. He, Deutch, and Cruz top a lengthy call sheet that also featured the talents of Jaboukie Young-White, Josh Segarra, Robert Longstreet, Arden Myrin, Kristin Slaysman, Allan McLeod, and Julia Sweeney. Behind the camera, meanwhile, is Chad Hartigan in his first feature since his romantic drama Little Fish with Olivia Cooke and Jack O’Connell in 2020. He directed from a script written by Ethan Ogilby, with Tim White, Trevor White, Vince Jolivette, and Steve Shapiro serving as producers.
‘The Threesome’ Enraptured Critics at SXSW
Earlier this year, The Threesome’s scintillating romantic drama captured the attention of attendees at SXSW, where it made its world premiere. It currently holds a robust 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, with high praise for its trio of lovers and the mature approach to the story around them. Collider’s Ross Bonaime specifically credited the stars in his 7/10 review, saying, “Deutch, Cruz, and Hauer-King also elevate this film beyond its script with their performances, with a compelling take on the love triangle that often goes in unexpected directions.” For Hartigan, the goal was to bring the rom-com genre back to a more grounded place than its more idealized contemporaries. In an interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff at the festival, he explained how his latest film combines realism with a funnier and more cinematic quality to make it stand out from the crowd:
“I was really just manifesting with that director’s statement. The romantic comedy needs to be back. I think it’s back. I did feel that the movies that have taken the center stage in this renaissance have been the ones that tend to be more wish-fulfillment and fantasy-driven and idealized versions of love and romance made for the movies, which we all love, but one thing that was missing was a take on it that was a bit more grounded and elevated and sophisticated and wasn’t afraid to really take a concept that was maybe made for the movies but examines how would people really deal with these situations and keep the characters focused and have all the humor come from the characters and not from set pieces and things like that.”
