MobLand is on its summer vacation, but if you think the Harrigans are keeping things on the DL, they’re doing a terrible job keeping a low profile. Netflix has unveiled the final trailer for The Thursday Murder Club, the star-studded adaptation of Richard Osman’s global best-seller — and its cast is clearly having the time of their lives running around a retirement home, solving murders, and brewing the perfect cup of tea. If you put the milk in first, you deserve prison time.

Arriving globally on August 28, 2025, the film marks Chris Columbus’ return to big-budget moviemaking. This time, the Home Alone and Harry Potter filmmaker trades in witches, wizards, and a psychotic child at Christmas time for something a little more low-key… at least on the surface. Think Knives Out by way of Calendar Girls, with a sprinkle of Midsomer Murders — not as much blood, but you’ll definitely enjoy it with a biscuit or two.

What Is ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ About?

Based on Osman’s debut novel, the story unfolds in Coopers Chase, a seemingly idyllic luxury retirement community where the average resident’s favorite activity might be gossip… or amateur sleuthing. The titular club is led by Helen Mirren as Elizabeth, a former MI5 agent whose polite smile hides a mind like a steel trap, sort of like your granny who savages people behind their back — and a garden shed suspiciously well-stocked for “potting plants.” Pierce Brosnan — minus the compelling attempt at a Kerry accent he’s been swinging around in Guy Ritchie’s MobLand — plays Ron, a retired union boss with booming one-liners and zero patience for fools. Ben Kingsley joins as Ibrahim, a retired psychiatrist whose still demeanor masks his razor-sharp perception, and Celia Imrie plays Joyce, whose relentlessly sunlit diary entries may contain more clues than she realizes.

Speaking with Collider, Columbus explained what drew him to Osman’s world:

“The idea was to create a retirement village that we’ve never seen before on film… a place where the viewers would want to spend their twilight years. This somewhat magical backdrop creates a strong contrast to the violent murders that occur in the film.”

It’s that contrast — charming community meets calculated killing — that gives The Thursday Murder Club its bite. While the club members may prefer a good crossword and a cuppa, they’re more than capable of tracking down a killer… even if it means skipping bingo night.

The Thursday Murder Club premieres globally on Netflix on August 28, 2025.
