“You should never settle for being a mediocre player.” Vinegar Hill and mTuckman Media have revealed the official trailer for a documentary film titled simply Clemente, about legendary baseball player Roberto Clemente from Puerto Rico. The film first premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival last year, and will be out to watch in theaters in September timed with MLB’s upcoming Roberto Clemente Day. Clemente is the definitive documentary examining the extraordinary life, career, and enduring legacy of MLB icon Roberto Clemente (#21 right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates). Executive Produced by LeBron James and Richard Linklater. A 15-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion, and first Latino player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Clemente broke barriers both on and off the field throughout his life, advocating for civil rights & humanitarian causes until his tragic death in a plane crash while delivering aid to Nicaragua in 1972. Linklater states his “legacy extends far beyond his achievements in baseball, and this doc celebrates the man behind the icon. Working on this project with the Clemente family has been an honor, we’re excited to share his inspiring story with the world.” This looks terrific! Much more than a basic doc about baseball.

Clemente explores the life, career, and lasting impact of Roberto Clemente. One of baseball’s most iconic figures, the trailblazing Puerto Rican baseball legend and humanitarian’s legacy continues to resonate across generations. The film features interviews with Rita Moreno, Michael Keaton, Francisco Lindor, Richard Linklater, Bob Costas, Tom Morello, David Maraniss, and Yadier Molina. As the first high-profile Latino player in the MLB in America, Roberto’s extraordinary career opened the door for generations of Latino baseball players to come. It is, however, his remarkable life off the field that defined his legacy. Committed to uplifting society’s marginalized & under-represented he fearlessly fought for social justice and racial equality with steadfast resolve. It is a film “that reminds us that an act of kindness, no matter how small, can change the world. It’s a celebration of the power of compassion, generosity, and sacrifice.”

Clemente is directed by American writer / editor / filmmaker David Altrogge, also director of films Twin Reflex and Neat: The Story of Bourbon previously, plus other tiny films and projects. Produced by Michael Hartnett, Mike Blizzard, John Bennett Scanlon, Mary Sabol, Andrew Calvetti, Jocelyn Hartnett, Keith Ayers, Stephen Turselli, and David & Sarah Altrogge. Produced by Vinegar Hill and Vantage Pictures. This initially premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival last year. mTuckman Media will debut Altrogge’s Clemente doc in select US theaters starting September 12th, 2025 coming soon. Timed to Hispanic Heritage Month and Major League Baseball’s annual Roberto Clemente Day on September 15th. Any fans? Who wants to watch?
