Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, the latest feature film in the Demon Slayer anime franchise, continues to set box office records in Japan.
As of August 11 (a national holiday), the film has earned a total of $148.6m (¥22bn) on 15.7 million admissions since its release July 18, and is now Japan’s 6th-highest-grossing film of all time, reports box office tracker Kogyo Tsushin.
Over its fourth weekend in cinemas, August 8-10, Infinity Castle earned $12.8m (¥1.9bn) on 1.3 million admissions, maintaining its #1 box office spot. In second and third place for the same weekend were fresh entry Jurassic World Rebirth with $8.8m (¥1.3bn) and domestic thriller Tokyo MER The Movie: Nankai Mission, earning $3.75m (¥556m) in its second weekend.
Infinity Castle is the latest in the popular animated film and TV franchise based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotoge and is the first of a planned trilogy of films wrapping up the story.
Directed by Haruo Sotozaki, it follows the ongoing adventures of Tanjiro Kamado, a adolescent man dedicated to hunting down monsters as part of the Demon Slayer Corps after his younger sister was turned into one.
It was reported this week that actor Channing Tatum will join the English-language dub cast of the film, which is set for cinemas in North America and the UK on September 12. Tatum will play martial arts master Keizo alongside fresh cast member Rebecca Wang, who plays Keizo’s daughter Koyuki.
The film previously earned $37.3m (¥5.52bn) from 3.84 million admissions during its opening weekend July 18-20, marking Japan’s highest-grossing opening weekend on record. It also set fresh records for best opening day and best single day, all of which had been previously set by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train.
