EXCLUSIVE: Magnolia Pictures’ genre arm Magnet Releasing has picked up North American rights to Tribeca Festival supernatural thriller Man Finds Tape, which XYZ Films will continue to sell internationally at TIFF next month.

Peter Hall and Paul Gandersman directed the story about Lynn, a documentarian who returns to her Texas hometown after receiving a cryptic phone call and begins to investigate disturbing footage of events nobody recalls.

As Lynn digs deeper, her brother’s connection to a once-viral web series called Man Finds Tape leads her to question the people in her town. When a stranger arrives, she must confront her family’s role in a legend tied to a monster stalking the town.

Kelsey Pribilski, William Magnuson, John Gholson, Brian Villalobos, and Nell Kessler star. Rustic Films’ David Lawson Jr., Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson produced with Ashley Landavazo, while Jessica Cargill and C. Robert Cargill, and XYZ Films serve as executive producers.

Magnolia SVP of acquisitions John Von Thaden brokered the deal with Nate Bolotin and Pip Ngo of XYZ Films on behalf of the filmmakers.

XYZ Films and Rustic Films worked together on Something In The Dirt, Synchronic, and Spring, as well as Tribeca selections The Endless and Resolution. XYZ Films’ action thriller The Furious from producer Bill Kong will receive its world premiere at TIFF.

Magnet’s recent releases include the all-female-directed horror anthology film XX, Takashi Miike’s Blade Of The Immortal, Mads Mikkelsen revenge thriller Riders Of Justice, and Carlota Pereda’s Piggy.
