Keri Russell is finally set to return as The Diplomat. The third season of the hit Netflix thriller will return this fall, and a up-to-date teaser promises to follow up on the fallout of last season’s heart-stopping finale. The up-to-date season will premiere on October 16, 2025.

Grace Penn (Allison Janney) is now the President of the United States, and that’s bad news for everyone, including US Ambassador to the UK Kate Wyler (Russell), who has previously been mooted as a replacement for the embattled Penn. However, now the President is dead, as an indirect result of Penn’s murderous schemes, elevating Penn to the highest office in the land, and only Kate and her diplomat husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) know the whole truth. Kate will find herself in the White House, keeping an eye on Penn, but will she finally bring her to justice? And what part will Penn’s disgraced husband, Todd (Bradley Whitford, reuniting with The West Wing co-star Janney) play in all this? You’ll have to tune in to Netflix this fall when The Diplomat returns.

What Happened in Season 2 of ‘The Diplomat’?

Wyler and her team have spent the first two seasons of The Diplomat investigating an attack on a British aircraft carrier that killed 41 soldiers; plus, she’s navigating the ins and outs of a up-to-date diplomatic posting as Ambassador to the UK that may be a test-run for installing her as the up-to-date US Vice President. Her leads have taken her to a number of suspects, from the Iranian government, to a Russian mercenary leader, and even to the UK’s own Prime Minister, Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear). However, in the closing episode of the second season, she found the true culprit: Vice President Grace Penn, who had done so to strengthen British national unity, and ensure America retained access to a vital nuclear submarine base. When Hal gave proof of Penn’s duplicity to US President William Rayburn (Michael McKean), the shock caused Rayburn to have an immediate and fatal heart attack, making Penn the up-to-date President.

The Diplomat has been a success with critics and audiences, and currently holds a 90% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In her review, Collider’s Taylor Gates lavished praise on season 2, calling it “one conspiracy thriller definitely worth getting tangled up in.”

Season three of The Diplomat will premiere exclusively on Netflix on October 16, 2025. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
