Star Wars news alert! Star Wars: Starfighter, the novel standalone adventure set in the galaxy far, far away, has officially gone into production. And, the very first image of Ryan Gosling on set has been shared. And, the full cast has been confirmed! A whole period in the timeline is about to be explored, for the very first time.

Set five years after The Rise Of Skywalker, Starfighter will be the first major piece of storytelling in the Star Wars galaxy beyond Episode IX, and will see Gosling play an entirely novel character. Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy is on directing duty, and the cast we knew about thus far included Gosling, Mia Goth, and Matt Smith. Today, to mark the start of production, Lucasfilm has announced more names for the credit list, including: multiple Oscar-nominated Amy Adams, Rebel Ridge’s Aaron Pierre; The Inbetweeners’ Simon Bird; I Hate Suzie’s Daniel Ings; star of the West End production of Hamilton, Jamael Westman; and youngster Flynn Gray. The first image from the set, shot by Ed Miller and shown above, features Gosling and Gray sitting on what looks like a Landspeeder.

Levy shared a statement to celebrate the shoot getting underway, saying: “I feel a profound sense of excitement and honour as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter. From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”

Star Wars: Starfighter is due to hit cinemas on 28 May, 2027.
