Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are officially sharing the screen again, though they are anything but affable. Netflix released the first trailer for their star-studded fresh action thriller, The Rip, pairing them up as Miami police officers raiding a derelict stash house where an eye-watering sum of cash is hidden. As soon as they uncover the millions, however, the trust between the squad quickly evaporates as they start to consider taking a cut for themselves. Between everyone in the building and those outside who become aware of the jackpot sitting within, they’re stuck in a precarious situation where they have no idea who to rely on or how to get out alive.

The trailer opens with Affleck’s cop being questioned about how the operation went down. On an average day in the suburbs, he and the rest of the officers roll up to the house in unmarked vehicles and confront the person who lives there. They received a tip about the money stashed there, but none of them expected a haul of $20 million hidden in the walls. Considering the pay for the job, everybody begins thinking the same thing — take the money for themselves and walk away. Things get complicated, however, when they receive a phone call from a mysterious voice giving them 30 minutes to abandon the house, or face the consequences. All hell breaks loose as the cops begin turning on each other, mysterious individuals get involved, and the situation unravels until it appears the squad may be pulled into a shootout with their own colleagues. The ambiguous nature of it all leaves viewers to question if they’re the good guys or not.

Adding to the intensity of The Rip is the fact that its morally ambiguous story is inspired by true events. Like the characters, it’s sure to make viewers question who to trust and root for to make it out of the messy mission alive. Coming off of Shadow Force earlier this year, gritty action veteran Joe Carnahan served as writer and director for the film with Affleck, Damon, Dani Bernfeld, and Luciana Damon producing. Carnahan landed a stacked cast to surround the friends and regular collaborators, including Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler.

Affleck and Damon Almost Had Another Collaboration in Line After ‘The Rip’

Since bursting onto the scene in the all-time classic Good Will Hunting, Affleck and Damon have been regular partners on-screen, from Kevin Smith‘s Dogma to Affleck’s own Air. After The Rip, they originally were going to collaborate once again on Affleck’s latest directorial effort, Animals, at Netflix. Alas, by the time the script was ironed out and the streamer was properly moving forward with the kidnapping thriller, Damon moved on from the starring role. He’s been justifiably busy of behind schedule playing the mythical role of Odysseus in Christopher Nolan‘s much-anticipated adaptation of The Odyssey, which just wrapped filming back in August before it sails into theaters on July 17, 2026. Given their collaborations, though, there are certain to be more on-screen partnerships between the Oscar winners to come at some point in the future.

The Rip releases on Netflix on January 16, 2026. Check out the trailer in the player above.
