Netflix has officially unveiled the modern trailer for The Diplomat Season 3, and Kate Wyler’s political nightmare is just beginning. The acclaimed drama, created by Debora Cahn and led by Emmy-nominated Keri Russell, returns October 16, 2025, with modern faces, higher stakes, and a White House in chaos.

Season 3 finds Kate in the one role she swore she never wanted: Vice President of the United States. After publicly accusing then–Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) of orchestrating a terrorist plot — and admitting she was gunning for the VP job herself — the President is dead, Grace has taken the Oval Office, and Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) may have inadvertently played a part in the catastrophe.

The modern trailer reveals a nation on edge as Kate adjusts to unprecedented power, Hal continues his relentless behind-the-scenes push to elevate her, and modern political players enter the scene. Among them: Bradley Whitford as First Gentleman Todd Penn, whose arrival on the scene brings a whole modern active and tension to proceedings. Alongside Russell, Sewell, and Janney, Season 3 features David Gyasi as Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh, with Celia Imrie, Michael McKean, Nana Mensah, and Miguel Sandoval also appearing.

Guest stars this season include Oscar winner Janney in an expanded role as President Grace Penn, and Whitford, who may have worked with Janney before somewhere, in the role of First Gentleman. Behind the camera, the series continues to be steered by Cahn, with executive producers Janice Williams, Russell, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie returning.

What Can We Expect from ‘The Diplomat’ Season 3?

If there’s one relationship fans are watching closely, it’s Kate and Hal’s. Executive producer Janice Williams recently told ScreenRant that their combustible active will continue to define the series:

“I think you saw in Season 2 they broke apart and they came together. That is the state of their union. That has always been the state of their union — to be madly in love with someone and [have rage] toward them all at the same time.”

Netflix already renewed The Diplomat for a fourth season ahead of Season 3’s debut, a sign of confidence in Russell’s performance and the show’s momentum. With awards recognition and a growing global audience, the political drama is cementing itself as one of Netflix’s flagship originals.

The Diplomat Season 3 premieres October 16, 2025, only on Netflix. The first two seasons are now streaming.
