Sony’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is the key release in UK and Ireland cinemas this weekend as the Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell flick opens in 640 venues.
Kogonada directs the feature about two strangers who embark on a magical journey to relive crucial moments from their respective pasts. Romance titles have seen solid numbers at the box office this year, with fellow Sony title Materialists opening on nearly £1m in August (£3.7m total) while Studiocanal’s We Live In Time debuted on £1.7m (£8.8m total) at the start of the year.
Robbie and Farrell have also proven bankable stars in the recent past. Robbie’s Barbie opened on £18.5m in 2023 – and eventually became the sixth highest-grossing film ever released in the territory – while Farrell’s The Banshees Of Inisherin debuted with £1.6m in 2022, going on to gross nearly £10m across a robust run.
Elsewhere, Polish animation Diplo: The Mighty Dinosaur launches in 311 venues for Signature Entertainment. Wojtek Wawszczyk’s film follows a dinosaur living in a comic book whose world begins to erase around him.
In event releases, Trafalgar Releasing has David Gilmour Live at the Circus Maximus, Rome out in 323 sites, The Sound Of Music 60th Anniversary on Saturday (September 20) and Andrea Bocelli: Because I Believe in 230 venues from Sunday (September 21). Also on Sunday, CinemaLive launches Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies.
Bakrania Media is opening Indian comedy drama Jolly LLB 3 in 106 locations.
Pakistani anti-war animation The Glassworker launches in 88 cinemas for Miracle Comms and Dazzler.
Modern Films has Japanese sci-fi Happyend in 27 venues. The film, which follows two teenagers about to graduate high school who pull a prank on their principal, first premiered in Venice Horizons in 2024.
Irish romance Girls & Boys is out in 19 cinemas via Break Out Pictures.
French drama Ghost Trail opens in nine sites for New Wave. Adam Bessa stars in Jonathan Millet’s debut, which first premiered in Cannes Critics’ Week 2024 and follows a Syrian man seeking revenge on his torturer.
Sandra Oh leads dystopian drama Can I Get A Witness? which TAPE Collective opens in eight cinemas. The film premiered at Toronto in 2024.
US sports biopic Queen Of The Ring launches in five venues for Vertigo Releasing. The film, about female wrestler Mildred Burke, stars Emily Bett Rickards as Burke, with Josh Lucas, Tyler Posey, and Walton Goggins also among the cast.
Documentary Ackroyd & Harvey: The Art Of Activism rolls out across five cinemas for Tull Stories.
Conviction: The Case of Lucy Letby, the documentary about the nurse convicted of the murder of seven babies, is opening in three locations for Dartmouth Films.
