EXCLUSIVE: Austria-based sales firm Odd Slice Films has boarded Miguel Eek’s documentary Amilcar.

The film was selected for the Envision strand at next month’s International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) earlier today.

Amilcar details the life of Amilcar Cabral, an African anti-colonialist leader in the 20th century who united more than one million Guineans to free themselves from Portuguese occupation, in turn propelling other colonised African countries to fight for independence.

The Portuguese- and French-language film is written by Eek and Alba Lombardia, and produced by Eek for Spain’s Mosaic Producciones.

Backers include the Institut d’Estudis Balearics, CNC, PROCIREP, Pictanovo, ICIB, ICAA, Creative Europe, ICA and RTP.

Odd Slice Films is run by Martina Droandi, former sales & acquisitions executive at Autlook Filmsales.

“We’re fortunate that IDFA is offering up to seven screenings — a real luxury these days,” said Eek. “I hope this exposure allows the film to reach an audience of true cinephiles, as well as buyers, distributors, and programmers who might want to accompany the film on a long festival journey around the world.”

“In the current political climate, it is very important to craft a space for historical figures like Amilcar, that remind us that social justice is never guaranteed – but needs to be built, nurtured and defended,” said Droandi.

The 2025 edition of IDFA runs from November 12-23.
