‘Chainsaw Man’ expands into fresh markets, hits $108m

Sony Pictures/Crunchyroll expanded Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc into North America, Latin America and Europe at the weekend, causing the anime title to surge to the top of the global box office.

Tatsuya Yoshihara’s film grossed an estimated $17.3m in North America (topping the box office) plus $14.7m in Sony/Crunchyroll international markets. The global weekend total (including Toho’s release in Japan) was an estimated $36m, and the cumulative worldwide total is now $108m.

Europe delivered an estimated $7.2m, led by Germany ($1.65m), France ($1.5m) and UK-Ireland ($1.4m). Latin America yielded an estimated $3.3m including $1.3m in Mexico.

South Korea raised its total to an impressive $19.1m (the fifth-biggest anime film of all time) after taking an estimated $1.8m (down just 12%) in its fifth weekend.

In North America, premium theatrical formats performed powerfully on the title, delivering 19% for Imax, 24% for premium huge format (PLF) and 20% for 3D and 4D.

Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is a direct sequel to the first season of the Chainsaw Man TV series (2022), and adapted from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga series.

The film follows in the wake of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle, which was likewise released by Toho in Japan and Sony/Crunchyroll in North America and most international markets. Global total is now $666.8m – the biggest ever for an anime film.

‘Regretting You’ begins with $23m

Paramount Pictures’ Regretting You, the second feature film adapted from a Colleen Hoover novel following It Ends With Us, has begun with an estimated $12.9m in North America, $10m across 43 international markets, and thus $22.9m globally.

In August 2024, Columbia Pictures/Wayfarer Studios’ It Ends With Us opened with $50m in North America, plus $30m across 41 international markets – an $80m worldwide debut. The film went on to achieve $351m worldwide, according to available data.

For Regretting You, UK/Ireland leads international markets with an estimated $1.85m, ahead of Germany ($1.65m), Australia ($1.4m), Mexico ($1.3m) and Brazil ($745,000).

Paramount estimates that the opening markets represent 77% of the international footprint, with 15 territories yet to release including France, Italy and Spain.

Directed by Josh Boone, Regretting You stars Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, Dave Franco and Mason Thames in a romantic drama telling the story of characters impacted by a fatal car crash. Paramount Pictures presents in association with Constantin Film, Domain Entertainment and north.five.six.

‘Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere’ lands with $16m

After its first weekend of release, Disney/20th Century Studios’ Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere has not quite matched the numbers achieved by last year’s A Complete Unknown, from Disney/Searchlight Pictures.

Deliver Me From Nowhere opened with an estimated $9.1m in North America plus $7m across an initial 28 international markets, combining for a global debut of $16.1m.

Last Christmas, A Complete Unknown opened in North America with a three-day $11.7m and a five-day $23.2m. International comparisons are harder to frame due to different release sequencing.

Among international markets, UK-Ireland is a brilliant spot for Deliver Me From Nowhere with an estimated $1.6m (topping the box office if Regretting You’s previews are excluded from consideration), ahead of Germany ($1m).

Key markets yet to release for the film include Brazil, Japan and South Korea.

Scott Cooper directs Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen in 1981-2, resisting pressure from his record label to capitalise on recent success, and instead delivering acoustic album Nebraska, recorded in his bedroom. Jeremy Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Odessa Young and Stephen Graham also star.

A Complete Unknown reached $75m in North America and $65.5m across international markets for a $140.5m worldwide total, according to available data.

‘One Battle After Another’ hits $180m

'One Battle After Another'

In cumulative box office, the highest-grossing film in the current worldwide top 10 chart is Warner Bros’ One Battle After Another. Paul Thomas Anderson’s film added an estimated $10.3m at the weekend, taking the total so far to $180m. That’s more than double the director’s previous biggest hit (2007’s There Will Be Blood with $76.4m worldwide), although that comparison is not adjusted for inflation.

Erosion from the previous weekend was a relatively subtle 34% across international markets and 39% in North America. One Battle After Another does not look on course to hit $200m this coming weekend, but should get there a week later.

Sony scores local hits

In addition to expanding Chainsaw Man, Sony also released two titles in home markets at the weekend, scoring successes.

Stage 6 Film and Screen Gems’ Sisu: Road To Revenge opened at the top of the box office in its home market Finland with an estimated $755,000 – 18% above the first Sisu film. Jalmari Helander’s sequel to his 2022 Second World War action film Sisu reaches North America and key international markets in tardy November.

Sony Pictures/Sony Music’s 50 Years Of Roland Kaiser – A Life For Music landed in the three German-speaking markets (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), debuting with an estimated $2m. The documentary/concert film follows the Schlager-style singer on his RK50 anniversary tour.
