Live-action video game adaptations are all the rage right now, and HBO Max has been picking up these franchises left, right, and center. The streamer already had The Last of Us, Mortal Kombat, and A Minecraft Movie in its catalog. Now, it looks like another beloved gaming franchise is set to join that lineup very soon.
This one is based on a long-running action-adventure series. The game sees players embark on globe-spanning missions to uncover historic artifacts and stop evil organizations from obtaining them. And no, it’s not Uncharted.
It’s Tomb Raider. Angelina Jolie first brought Lara Croft to the gigantic screen in the early 2000s, before Alicia Vikander took over in 2018’s Tomb Raider. This reboot swapped out Jolie’s globe-trotting femme fatale for a grittier, survival-mode Lara Croft who’s just trying to make it out alive. And now, the 2018 film is making its way to HBO Max, where fans can stream it starting May 24.

Fans Are Conflicted About the Upcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ Series
The 2018 Tomb Raider made a decent $275 million worldwide, but it struggled to win over critics and audiences. It holds a rotten 52% critic score and a 55% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Naturally, the franchise went silent for a few years before a modern series was announced, with Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner now set to play the titular character. The problem is that fans aren’t exactly thrilled about what they’ve seen so far.
A first look image released back in January showing Turner in the iconic Lara Croft look was met with immediate backlash online. Fans rushed to social media to argue that Turner simply didn’t fit the femme fatale role. Even the official GameStop X account reposted the promotional image with the caption, “This is not Lara Croft,” which only poured fuel on the fire. But this kind of outrage is practically a rite of passage for live-action adaptations of beloved IP at this point. The exact same thing happened just weeks ago when the God of War first look dropped. Bella Ramsey still gets criticism for not “looking” like Ellie from The Last of Us, and yet she is undeniably phenomenal in the series. Expecting an actor to be a pixel-perfect match for a computer-generated character is simply not a reasonable bar to set. Turner has already proven with Game of Thrones that she has the range and the presence to carry a major role, and once that first trailer arrives, it’s a secure bet the conversation will change pretty quickly.
