Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all rights to Cannes L’Oeil d’Or-winning documentary Rehearsals For A Revolution in North and Latin America, Asia (except Japan) and other markets.
The distributor also acquired all rights to the film in New Zealand, Turkey and Portugal and for worldwide airlines.
Premiered in the Special Screenings section before winning the festival’s documentary award, Rehearsals is the debut feature from actress Pegah Ahangarani.
Drawing from personal archives, home videos, footage of street protests, newspapers and recorded voices, Ahangarani retraces more than 40 years of Iran’s history and sketches her life story through five portraits of relatives and mentors. From the 1979 Islamic Revolution to the war with the US and Israel that began in February, the film is a portrait of a country shaped by political repression and in constant hope for a revolution.
The Cannes L’Oeil d’or jury said it was struck by the film’s “masterful script and vivid, urgent storytelling, and by a filmmaker who carried us through violent waves of history while never losing sight of the value of each human life.”
Rehearsals is written and directed by Ahangarani and edited by Arash Ashtiani, with co-writers Ehsan Abdipour, Amir Ahmadi Arian, Arash Ashtiani and Majed Neisi. It was made in association with the Czech Republic’s Media Nest and Spain’s Fasten Films. French distribution is through Jour2Fête Distribution, while The Party Film Sales handles international sales.
