Gladiator II: The Epic Sequel Arrives

An Epic Return to Ancient Rome

When Gladiator was released in 2000, audiences were transported to ancient Rome, witnessing the brutal death matches at the Colosseum. At its heart was Russell Crowe’s unforgettable performance as Maximus, an inspirational underdog fighting against the corrupt Roman regime. Now, Empire exclusively reveals a new chapter in the Gladiator saga – Gladiator II.

No pressure, then, for Paul Mescal, who takes on the lead role as Lucius, a fierce new fighter inspired by the legendary Maximus. Set two decades after the original, the movie brings a fresh protagonist while mirroring the same epic themes as the first film.

Sacrificing Expectation

Bring in a fresh protagonist, but be true to the original. David Scarpa, the screenwriter of the latest installment, shares the thought process that went into creating Lucius, an opposable hero.

“The first film starts with Maximus, a Roman general battling a barbarian army,” Scarlett says. “My notion was to set the second film in the world with these same barbarian forces now coming up against the Romans.” While Lucius fights the wrong side, he harbors similar anger and hatred towards the empire just like Maximus.

Fierce Face-Offs Ahead

In the arena, the audience will witness Mescal, Lucius, taking on tough opponents, including rampaging rhinos. Pedro Pascal plays the key role of General Acacius in these combat scenes. Who comes out on top may be revealed later. Here, Mescal speaks his confidence:

“I think I’d win in a fight between me and Pedro, but he’s deceitful,” he tells Empire.” Pedro is one of the funniest gentlemen I know, but he can actually [expletive] do and there’s a beast within his grasp.”
